Words to Live By

1. Mind precedes all mental states. Mind is their chief; they are all mind-wrought. If with an impure mind a person speaks or acts suffering follows him like the wheel that follows the foot of the ox.

2. Mind precedes all mental states. Mind is their chief; they are all mind-wrought. If with a pure mind a person speaks or acts happiness follows him like his never-departing shadow.

I need to remember this more often. I also, on a whim, looked up the definition of Sophistocate.

Sophistocate:

1) To cause to become less natural, especially to make less naive and more worldly.
2) To make impure; adulterate.
3) To make more complex or inclusive; refine.

Funny. I feel society has definately made me feel less natural, impure, and more complex. Yay, I am sophisticated!

Er...... normally being told I was sophisticated I would consider a compliment. After reading this definition, I'm not so sure. Being sophisticated kinda sucks.

"If you cannot be at ease with yourself when alone, you will seek a relationship to cover up your unease. You can be sure that the unease will then reappear in some other form within the relationship, and you will probably hold your partner responsible for it."

Ain't this the truth? There's a billion signals in our culture every day that tell us, all you need to be happy is to find love and get married! What a crock of shit. If you aren't happy alone, what the fuck makes you think spending an outrageous amount of time with another person of the opposite sex is going to fix it? I assure all ye readers (1!) happiness lies not in love.

I think you might have more readers... I ended up having more than I thought. Maybe the things you write about are more of a contribution than you thought!

I never thought of sophisticate in the verb sense but you are right, it doesn't seem to be a compliment. But can you be "sophisticated" if you "sophisticate" the others around you? Wouldn't you be wise enough not to do that? Is it a downward spiral I wonder?

Maybe I missed the point!

Who said being sophisticated was wise?

That should read..... Who said being sophisticated means you're also wise

The dictionary said so!

To be wise - worldly.

Sophisticated:

1. (of a person, ideas, tastes, manners, etc.) altered by education, experience, etc., so as to be worldly-wise; not naive: a sophisticated young socialite; the sophisticated eye of a journalist.
2. pleasing or satisfactory to the tastes of sophisticates: sophisticated music.
3. deceptive; misleading.
4. complex or intricate, as a system, process, piece of machinery, or the like: a sophisticated electronic control system.
5. of, for, or reflecting educated taste, knowledgeable use, etc.: Many Americans are drinking more sophisticated wines now.

Hmm it doesn't say "To be wise - wordly" it says "To be Worldly-wise" as in wise to the ways of the world. Not necessarily wise in general. At least I think thats what it means.

It would certainly be contradictory if it meant wise in genearl, because certainly a wise person has no use for deception. (definition 3) However a person who is "worldly-wise" may feel deception is just the a part of the way things are. It's just how you get things done in this world.

I think we need to go back to my post where I say, words suck, they are so fucking vague.

vague
=====
1. not clearly or explicitly stated or expressed: vague promises.
2. indefinite or indistinct in nature or character, as ideas or feelings: a vague premonition of disaster.
3. not clear or distinct to the sight or any other sense; perceptible or recognizable only in an indefinite way: vague shapes in the dark; vague murmurs behind a door.
4. not definitely established, determined, confirmed, or known; uncertain: a vague rumor; The date of his birth is vague.
5. (of persons) not clear or definite in thought, understanding, or expression: vague about his motives; a vague person.
6. (of the eyes, expression, etc.) showing lack of clear perception or understanding: a vague stare.
